Our nearest town is Avon, ten miles to the west and it is smaller than Elliston but it does have a cafe so many of us have Sunday breakfast there and visit with our neighbors to the west. Deer Lodge is the County seat of Powell County and has a population of around 3,000. In addition to many stores and museums and the Montana State Prison Deer Lodge is home our weekly newspaper, The Silver state Post, which reports our news each week. Most of our shopping is done in Helena, Montana which lies twenty-four miles to our east. Helena is Montana’s Capital city and is consequentially more cosmopolitan than you would expect of a city of less than 30,000. Helena even has a Wal-Mart! The state government holds it’s legislative sessions in Helena and the Governor of the state lives there. Most of the State agencies have there headquarters in Helena and most Federal agencies have their State headquarters for Montana in Helena.
